Enjoying Ottawa: Summertime Staycation Destinations

While residents of Ontario are generally relieved that the province's reopening plan happened faster than originally anticipated, many people are still somewhat hesitant to do any cross-border travels or vacations just yet. Luckily, there is still plenty to do close to home that will make your summer break one to remember for years to come. This is a great way to pocket some money and thoroughly enjoy the pleasures and hidden gems awaiting you right in your own backyard. Ottawa and its surrounding area are beautiful and filled with culture, a variety of ecosystems, trails, and parks, making it the perfect place to explore with some time off. So if you're looking to indulge in a staycation this year, here are a few ways for you to get to know your city a bit better.

Enjoy A Winery

When people think of Ottawa, they likely picture the beautiful views of parliament, overlooking the Ottawa river. What you may not think of, is the beautiful views and unique experiences had at Kin Vineyards located in the heart of the Ottawa Valley. Here you can enjoy a glass of wine on their patio, or stay for a delicious italian meal from Joe’s Italian Kitchen. Spending a summer night at the vineyard will have you feeling like you took a mini vacation to italy, without ever leaving the city.

Head To The Drive-in

What once may have felt like a thing of the past, especially with indoor theatres elevating their experience with reclining chairs and unique food options, drive-in theatres are making a comeback. Take the entire family and spend a night watching some of your favourite movies under the stars in Ottawa this summer. Within the city you can head to the drive-in experience at Wesley Clover Park in the west or at 300 Coventry Road in the east. In Ottawa’s surrounding areas, you can also enjoy the drive-in movie experience at the Port Elmsley Drive-in Theatre, and the Skylight Drive-in Theatre.

Let's Go Glamping

Southern Ontario is home to a wide variety of beautiful greenspace, rural areas, and backwoods that provide beautiful scenery for a getaway. No matter if you are looking for significant time away for a summer vacation or if you want to spend a weekend trying out new experiences with your family or friends, enjoying your very own “Glamping” experience in Ottawa’s backyard can provide you with excellent activity,  and stunning accommodation. With your choice of yurts, cabins, or treehouses you will be sure to make some amazing memories.

Visit Our Provincial Parks

Whether you want to escape for a day or spend some summer nights camping in your tent with the family, enjoying your time roasting marshmallows and exploring the great outdoors, Ontario Provincial Parks  will provide fun for everyone. Around Ottawa, you can venture out to Algonquin Park, Rideau River Provincial Park, or Fitzroy Provincial Park to enjoy time outside, hiking, swimming, canoeing, kayaking, and exploring the beautiful and diverse ecosystems in and around our city.

1000 Islands Cruises

As a relatively inexpensive getaway, this will surely be enjoyed by the entire family. Pack up for the day and head south west of Ottawa to Brockville or Gananoque where you can enjoy a day cruising the St Lawrence River. Many local boat tours provide an experience you won’t soon forget. There are beautiful water views, secluded islands, and millionaires row that you can view from the cruise, as well as many restaurants, parks, and museums for you to check out within the city. Being such a short drive away from Ottawa, you will wonder why you didn't indulge in the 1000 islands cruises sooner.
